Dear Parishioners of Saint Polycarp,
Each year, through a diocesan project called the Pastoral Services Appeal or simply PSA, Bishop Vann invites us to live out the two greatest commandments of loving God and loving others. The theme for this year’s PSA is “Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied,” which is found in the Beatitudes (Lk 6:17).
The Beatitudes is also known as the Sermon on the Mountain, from which Jesus proclaimed citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven. Often times, due to the sacred value of the Kingdom of Heaven, we harbor a thought that to merit the Kingdom of Heaven people ought to be super perfect and must be considered the top tier of society. These people should not suffer and be free from all bad things. However, if carefully read, the Gospel seems to say the opposite: Citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven belong to the “little ones,” to those who only depend on God and choose Him as their only source of consolation and hope.
Let us now consider the “little ones” or those Jesus proclaimed as “blessed” of the Kingdom of Heaven. These are those who are at the bottom of society; those who struggle to gain basic human dignity, needs, and rights. Perhaps these are also our Catholic brothers and sisters.
Many of us have heard of the emotional and spiritual support that the PSA has provided to our brothers and sisters in the Diocese of Orange. Catholic Charities, as well as other charities, in our diocese has provided so much support to young mothers who struggle to keep their pregnancy and to have decent living arrangement for their babies, or who struggle with emotional issues, whether it is violence in the family or poor social choice.
On the one hand, your generous support has helped to bring hope to our less-fortunate brothers and sisters, and, especially, those from our parish. On the other hand, your support opens our hearts to the teaching of Jesus, and helps to renovate our parish facility.
At Saint Polycarp, I am grateful for your support with the PSA. Not only that we reach our goal quickly, but we also surpass the assigned goal in an amazing manner. The PSA surplus that we received from the diocese has been used to upgrade our facility. For example, we renovated the modular buildings, which housed the St. Polycarp, Blessed McGivney, and Saint Pope John Paul II (Youth Office) conference rooms, and to replace all windows for the sacristy of the church. In addition, at the end of each faith formation year, we provide some financial support to some students from First Communion and Confirmation programs, who are not able or struggle to pay their tuition. During the summer, we help our children to have a healthy and holy summer program—for example, classes in cooking, music, bible, sewing, a week of camping, and the famous “Talents Show.”
This year, our parish PSA will kick-off with lay witnesses on the weekend of the 9thof February, and the contribution on the weekend of the 15 of February. To our lay-witnesses, be assured of my prayers and blessings on you. To conclude, I pray that one day our dreams may come to fulfillment in the Kingdom of Heaven: “Blessed are you who build the Kingdom of Heaven on earth.”

Estimados feligreses de San Policarpo:
Cada año, a través del proyecto diocesano llamado Campaña de Servicios Pastorales o simplemente PSA, el obispo Vann nos invita a vivir los dos mandamientos más importantes: amar a Dios y amar al prójimo. El tema de la Campaña de Servicios Pastorales de este año es “Bienaventurados los que ahora tienen hambre, porque serán saciados”, que se encuentra en las Bienaventuranzas (Lc 6,17).
Las Bienaventuranzas también se conocen como el Sermón de la Montaña, desde el cual Jesús proclamó a los ciudadanos del Reino de los Cielos. Muchas veces, debido al valor sagrado del Reino de los Cielos, albergamos la idea de que para merecer el Reino de los Cielos las personas deben ser súper perfectas y deben ser consideradas el nivel superior de la sociedad. Estas personas no deben sufrir y estar libres de todo mal. Sin embargo, si se lee con atención, el Evangelio parece decir lo contrario: los ciudadanos del Reino de los Cielos pertenecen a los “pequeños”, a aquellos que solo dependen de Dios y lo eligen como su única fuente de consuelo y esperanza.
Pensemos ahora en los “pequeños” o aquellos a quienes Jesús proclamó como “bienaventurados” del Reino de los Cielos. Estos son aquellos que están en el fondo de la sociedad; aquellos que luchan por obtener la dignidad, las necesidades y los derechos humanos básicos. Quizás estos también sean nuestros hermanos y hermanas católicos.
Muchos de nosotros hemos oído hablar del apoyo emocional y espiritual que la PSA ha brindado a nuestros hermanos y hermanas en la Diócesis de Orange. La Caridad Católica ha brindado mucho apoyo a las madres jóvenes que luchan por mantener su embarazo y tener condiciones de vida decentes para sus bebés, o que luchan con problemas emocionales, ya sea violencia en la familia o mala elección social.
Por un lado, su generoso apoyo ha ayudado a llevar esperanza a nuestros hermanos y hermanas menos afortunados y, especialmente, a los de nuestra parroquia. Por otro lado, su apoyo abre nuestros corazones a la enseñanza de Jesús y ayuda a renovar las instalaciones de nuestra parroquia.
En Saint Polycarp, estoy agradecido por su apoyo con la PSA. No solo alcanzamos nuestra meta rápidamente, sino que también superamos la meta asignada de una manera asombrosa. El excedente de la PSA que recibimos de la diócesis se ha utilizado para mejorar nuestras instalaciones. Por ejemplo, renovamos los edificios modulares, que albergaban las salas de conferencias de San Policarpo, Beato McGivney y San Juan Pablo II, y para reemplazar todas las ventanas de la sacristía de la iglesia. Además, al final de cada año de formación en la fe, brindamos algún apoyo financiero a algunos estudiantes de los programas de Primera Comunión y Confirmación, que no pueden o tienen dificultades para pagar su matrícula. Durante el verano, ayudamos a nuestros niños a tener un programa de verano saludable y santo, por ejemplo, clases de cocina, música, Biblia, costura, una semana de campamento y el famoso “Show de Talentos”.
Este año, nuestra PSA parroquial comenzará con testimonios de laicos el fin de semana del 9 de febrero, y la contribución el fin de semana del 15 de febrero. A nuestros testigos laicos, tengan la seguridad de mis oraciones y bendiciones. Para concluir, rezo para que un día nuestros sueños se hagan realidad en el Reino de los Cielos: “Bienaventurados los que construyen el Reino de los Cielos aquí en la tierra”.

Quý Ông Bà và Anh Chị em thân mến,
Hằng năm, qua chương trình Quỹ Mục của Giáo Phận hay đơn thuần gọi tắt là PSA (Pastoral Services Appeal), Đức Cha Vann mời gọi mọi tín hữu chúng ta cùng với ngài thực thi hai giới răn “mến Chúa và yêu người. Chủ đề của Quỹ Mục Vụ năm nay là “Phúc cho ngươi đang đói khát vì ngươi sẽ được no đủ;” một trong Tám Mối Phúc Thật (Lc 6:17).
Tám Mối Phúc Thật cũng được gọi là Bài Giảng Trên Núi, nơi Chúa Giêsu tuyên bố những công dân thuộc về Nước Trời. Vì giá trị cao quí của Nước Trời, thông thường chúng ta nghĩ rằng Nước Trời chỉ dành cho những người có công vị cao trong xã hội. Nhưng qua Bài Giảng Trên Núi, Chúa Giêsu lại nói Nước Trời thuộc về những kẻ bé mọn, những kẻ chỉ biết tựa vào Thiên Chúa và chọn Ngài là nguồn Hy Vọng duy nhất.
Chúng ta cùng hình dung đến những người “bé mọn” hay những người mà Chúa Giêsu cho là “phúc” trong Nước Trời. Đây có thể là những người ở đáy của xã hội; là những người đang tranh đấu và khát khao cho những nhu cầu và quyền lợi căn bản của nhân phẩm. Có thể họ là những anh chị em công giáo của chúng ta.
Đa số chúng ta đã từng nghe biết về những hỗ trợ tinh thần, thiêng liêng mà Quỹ Mục Vụ thường cung cấp cho những anh chị em trong Giáo Phận Orange chúng ta. Hằng năm, qua Hội Từ Thiện Công Giáo (Catholic Charities), cũng như các hội bác ái khác trong giáo phận, Quỹ Mục Vụ đã nâng đỡ và mang Chúa đến rất nhiều anh chị em Công Giáo trong Giáo Phận Orange của chúng ta. Văn phòng này đã giúp đỡ rất nhiều các cô gái trẻ độc thân đang gặp phải khó khăn chọn lựa giữ bào thai ngoài ý muốn. Kế tiếp là giúp tìm kiếm cho chính người mẹ và đứa con trẻ sơ sinh của họ một nơi ở lành mạnh và an toàn; hoặc giúp những người vướng phải những vấn đề tình cảnh bất hạnh, dẫu đó là vấn đề bạo động trong gia đình hay vật lộn với những lựa chọn sai trong cuộc sống.
Nói tóm lại, qua sự đóng góp rộng rãi cho Quỹ Mục Vụ, chúng ta giúp mang hy vọng đến những anh chị em kém may mắn, nhất là những anh chị em trong giáo phận và giáo xứ của chúng ta. Hơn nữa, Quỹ Mục Vụ mở lòng ta nối tiếp sứ mệnh loan truyền lời giảng dạy của Chúa Giêsu, đồng thời giúp duy trì hạ tầng cơ sở của giáo xứ, tức là ngôi nhà thiêng liêng của chúng ta.
Tại giáo xứ Thánh Polycarp, chúng tôi hằng tri ân đến sự đóng góp của quý vị cho Quỹ Mục Vụ. Không những chúng ta đạt đến mục tiêu một cách nhanh lẹ, nhưng còn vượt qua mục tiêu được giao một cách tuyệt vời. Số tiền thặng dư mà chúng ta nhận từ giáo phận đã được dùng trong việc sửa sang hạ tầng cơ sở giáo xứ. Năm nay, chúng ta sửa sang lại khu phòng họp của Saint Polycarp, Blessed McGiveney, và Saint Pope John Paul II (Văn phòng Giới Trẻ), và chúng ta cũng thay tất cả cửa sổ của phòng thánh. Chúng ta cũng mua các Sách Lễ và Sách Bài Đọc mới cho ba ngôn ngữ Anh, Việt, và Tây Ban Nha. Thêm vào đó, vào cuối năm học của Chương Trình Giáo Lý, chúng ta giúp trả tiền lệ phí cho một số em nghèo trong chương trình Rước Lễ Lần Đầu và Thêm Sức. Vào dịp hè, chúng ta giúp các con em của chúng ta có những chương trình hè lành mạnh và thánh thiện–chẳng hạn như lớp nấu ăn, lớp nhạc, lớp Kinh Thánh, lớp học may, tuần trại hè (camping), và chương trình Diễn Xuất Tài Năng (Talents Show).
Năm nay, giáo xứ chúng ta sẽ bắt đầu Quỹ Mục Vụ với những nhân chứng giáo dân vào cuối tuần của ngày mùng 9 tháng hai, và khởi sướng việc đóng góp cho PSA vào cuối tuần của ngày 15 kế tới. Với những nhân chứng giáo dân, xin quí vị nhận nơi chúng tôi lời tri ân, cầu nguyện và sự chúc phúc. Cuối cùng, chúng tôi cầu mong một ngày nào đó những ước mơ của chúng ta sẽ thành tựu trên Thiên Quốc: “Phúc cho các con, vì đã xây dựng Nước Trời nơi dương thế.”
