Dear Parishioners of Saint Polycarp,

Greetings and peace in the Lord Jesus. As we begin the Season of Lent and prepare for our Diocesan 2024’s Pastoral Service Appeal (PSA), I invite you to reflect on the Holy Father’s Lenten message.

When God reveals himself, his message is always one of freedom: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery” (Ex. 20:2). These are the first words of the Decalogue given to Moses on Mount Sinai. Those who heard them were quite familiar with the exodus of which God spoke: the experience of their bondage still weighed heavily upon them. In the desert, they received the “Ten Words” as a thoroughfare to freedom.

Freedom is an essential and basic human right—to be free from oppression, addictions, violence, and suffering. Even though freedom is a God-given right, it involves human efforts. Only a human person can assist other persons to free themselves from various imprisonments. As Catholics, Jesus calls us to build and form a healthy community, in which individuals ~ (our brothers and sisters) ~ are free to experience God’s goodness, grace, and love.

Lent calls and encourages each of us to be free from sins and vices so that we can be free to love God and our neighbors (Mk 12:30-31). The annual PSA is a way for us to heed the call of Jesus through our Bishop Vann to assist others, namely our Catholic brothers and sisters in our Diocese of Orange, to live freely in the love of God.

This year our PSA theme is “Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted” (Psalm 147). To be free is part of the process of healing—namely healing from brokenness, addictions, sufferings, and emotional or spiritual wounds.

Last year, our parish of Saint Polycarp responded marvelously to our Bishop’s invitation to contribute to the 2023 PSA of $98,000. On one hand, we fulfill 2023’s goal with speed. On the other hand, from your generous response, we received 100% of our PSA rebate, and we used that rebate to repair various projects in our parish. For example, we replaced three new motors to the three gates, all school and church keys, and an internet system to prevent scammers or hackers. Through the volunteering support of our parishioners, we were able to replace the lighting in our parking lot. We also were able to update our electrical panels and switches in the church. We also used our rebate money to support some of our World Youth Day attendees, summer programs, and other spiritual-pastoral events in the parish. Most of all, through the PSA contribution, we came together as a community of faith; we made more visible the “Mystical Body of Christ.”

Just like last year, this year’s PSA goal is $98,000. I know this amount is a lot. However, I trust that with your support we can overcome and achieve this goal. I pledge to you that any money received from the rebate will be used toward the repairing of our module buildings; they are the St. Polycarp, Blessed McGiveney, and Saint Pope John Paul II’s conference rooms. The exterior of these rooms is run-down and needs our attention. I intend to also assist the Faith Formation Programs and other youth events.

Together with my brother priests and staff, I invoke the blessings from Our Lord Jesus Christ, the special intercession of Our Blessed Mother, Saint Joseph, and Our Patron Saint Polycarp upon you and your family. From the depth of my heart, accept my prayers and gratitude for your love and support of this beautiful family of Saint Polycarp.

Father Viet Peter Ho
